Understand How the Marcel Works

Practice rolling the iron in your dominant hand with it unplugged! The Marcel is different from any other curling iron, so it is essential to familiarize yourself with its mechanics.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Practice curling your hair or the hair of a mannequin without turning on your iron. This will help you better understand how the Marcel iron works. Practice makes perfect! Take as much time as you need to without turning the iron on.

Turn the Iron on the Lowest Setting

Practice on a mannequin head at the lowest temperature (280 degrees). This will help you create a curl and see how you're doing. Ensure that the clamp is facing outward; this will help prevent a crease in your curl. I like to make my curls face away from the face.

Protect the Hair

Apply heat protectant to whoever's hair you are curling with the Marcel (whether it's yourself or a client). Using a heat protectant is super important as you use heat on the hair and do not want to damage it.

Practice on yourself or a client on the lowest heat setting available (280 degrees). If you have finally gotten the hang of it after practicing on a mannequin, you can go ahead and practice on yourself or a client. Be very careful, as this is a new process that you are learning, and the Marcel iron can take a while to get used to.
