This fabric covered handmade book was inspired by Mark Montano's similar project from The Big Ass Book of Crafts under the "Bored At My Desk" chapter.

Materials

For this project, what you will need are:

  • corrugated cardboard
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • X-acto knife
  • fabric
  • rubber cement
  • spray adhesive
  • notebook paper
  • cardstock (not shown)

Cut Cardboard

First, grab your X-acto knife and cut your corrugated cardboard to the size that you want. You will need the front and back covers, plus the spine that measures 1/2" x the size of your covers.

Add Fabric

Next, lay a piece of fabric on top of your workspace, and place your cardboard pieces on top of that. From there, grab a pencil and trace around the cardboard pieces, leaving just enough space to cut off the corners. From there, cut off the corners and any excess fabric, making sure to leave the space in the center exposed, so that way you can easily replace the cardboard pieces.

Glue It Down

Now, grab your spray adhesive and attach the cardboard pieces to the fabric. Then, fold the fabric over, attaching those areas down as well.

Add End Covers

Now, you're going to make the end covers for the front and back covers of the book. To do this, measure out a piece of cardstock to the same size as your covers, but shaving off at least 1/4" off the top, bottom, and one of the sides of each end cover. Then, use spray adhesive to glue them down on either side.

Add Pages

Then, you're going to add whatever pages you want to use for your book. Measure out your notebook pages that will fit into the covers, and use rubber cement to carefully attach the sides of the pages to the inside spine of the book.

From there, stand the book up on its spine with bookends to let dry overnight.

Complete!
