Adjustable-Length Sliding Knot Necklace: Easiest Knot Edition

flip.jpg

On investigating how to make an adjustable-length sliding knot necklace, I have come across 4 different versions of knots to use. There may be more. As I become aware of them, I will add links here. However, here are the versions of which I am aware.

  1. What I'm calling the easiest knot (this tutorial)
  2. What I'm calling the loop knot
  3. What is called the barrel knot
  4. I'm still trying to find the fourth one, but that is more of a macrame knot

Below are the instructions for the easiest knot I've found.

Supplies

For equipment, you will need:

  1. A tape measure.
  2. Something to cut with, like a pair of scissors.

For supplies, you will need:

  1. A cord. I am using a 2mm leather cord. I have seen instructions for 1.5mm cords, 2mm satin cords, and leather lacing; so it is really up to you want you want to use. Must make sure it will allow the knots to slide (no chains!).

Measure and Cut

I am going to use the 32" length in the instructions I found. However, you can use any length. Just make sure the length will fit around the widest part of your head or wrist. Measure the cord to the length you chose and cut it at that point.

Thread the Bail

If your necklace is going to have a charm with a bail, run the cord through the bail. Otherwise, skip this step.

Align the Cords

Arrange your cord so one end is above the rest of the loop.

Wrap Your Finger

Wrap the loose end of the cord around your finger twice going up your finger. Make sure the loop cord is included in your wrap.

Thread the Loops

Take your finger out of the coil of loops. Then, thread the loose end of the cord through the tunnel of loops you made.

Tighten the Knot

Tighten the knot by pulling on the loose end and the cord it originated from. Take your time and manipulate the knot loops to keep them together and aligned.

Flip and Repeat

Turn your piece around, and repeat steps 3 through 6.

Conclusion

Here's an odd thing. The loop knot method (I'll add a link when that Instructables is done) used a 33½" cord. After making that necklace, the cord was tighter around my head than this one was at 32". This is a very quick method to achieve a sliding knot for an adjustable necklace or bracelet. You will just have to take your time at first when tightening the knot, as it can go wonky.
