1-hour Wood Jewelry Box

I had some earrings to give as a gift, but needed a nice box for them. I made this simple wooden box in an hour.

Materials:

• 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch x 2 inch piece of scrap wood
• Sandpaper
• Wood glue
• Oil

Tools:

• Saw
• Drill-press
• Belt-sander

Round the edges of your scrapwood using a belt sander (photo 1).

Cut 3 thin slices from the piece with a saw (photo 2). These will be come the top and bottom of the jewelry box.

With an appropriate drill bit (I used 1 1/8 inch), drill through the scrapwood (photo 3).

Trace the size of your drilled circle onto one of your thin slices of wood. Using the belt-sander again, sand down this piece until it is a perfect circle that just fits inside your scrapwood (photo 4 and 5).

Sand down all of the pieces until no rough edges remain (photo 1).

Save the nicer/more interesting slice for the lid of the jewelry box. Making sure that it is centred to your main box, glue the circle to the slice (photo 2).

At the same time, line up the bottom slice to your main box and glue it together (photo 3).

After it is dry, place the lid on the box. Sand down the entire box so that the edges are all aligned and ensure that there is no residual wood glue.

I used Tung Oil to bring out the grain and protect the wood, but most oils will work.

Fill the box with some spare black wool to make a nice backdrop for the earrings.

It was that easy, taking just one hour to complete!
